Using molecular ‘cookie cutters’ to view membrane protein organization

With Native-nanoBleach, nanodiscs containing target membrane proteins and their native cell membrane environment are cut out of the cell membrane. Each protein subunit has a molecule attached to it that fluoresces under light. Over time, the light exposure will bleach the fluorescent molecules, and the step-wise decrease in fluorescence allows researchers to count how many protein subunits are in each nanodisc.
